Jamila Gipson, Associate Counselor
I work with individuals living with the stress of college/grad school or work; those impacted directly and indirectly by judicial and legal system; young adults adjusting to changes in career, relationships and more and adults experiencing grief, mood changes, low self esteem and the impact of trauma. I also work with individuals living with procrastination, avoidance, isolation/withdrawal, social anxiety, low self esteem and frequent mood changes and those looking to make behavioral improvements or gain skills to manage ADHD and/or behavioral challenges. My training at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and work experience as a Registered Behavioral Therapist have provided educational and direct experience in supporting implementing individualized treatment and behavior intervention plans for behavioral issues, everyday stressors that cause anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder and other mental health diagnoses.
I conduct a thorough initial assessment to aid in diagnosing depression, anxiety disorder, PTSD, bipolar disorder and screen for suicidality. I collaborate with clients to identify the psychological impact of their past and current experiences and relationships on mood, behavior and feelings. We will identify triggers and correlate emotional, behavioral cognitive responses and reactions. I develop a treatment plan with each client to track the progression of the intensity, duration and frequency of symptoms.
I coordinate ongoing assessment of strengths, needs, abilities, and preferences. I have also worked with individuals and families who have been impacted by crime and/or the legal system. In that regard, I have facilitated court, probation appointments, and psycho-educational groups for youth ages 12-18. I have led the analytical research and the development of recommendations to implement behavioral support of juveniles.
My clients experience me as direct, collaborative, validating, supportive, honest, compassionate and sensitive to their needs and wants. I prioritize clients while also making sure that clients do not continue on in the behaviors that are comfortable yet helpful to their mental and overall well being.
I am providing mental health counseling under the clinical supervision of Barbara Adika, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (MD) and Licensed professional Counselor (Washington, DC).
